Enphase
How one integration with deX is opening up endless possibilities
Case study
As a leading manufacturer of solar energy products and smart software, Enphase is continually seeking ways to deliver more value back to its customers.
With a single integration with deX, Enphase can provide telemetry back to all networks using the platform in a safe and secure manner.
By providing better visibility and understanding to those responsible for operating the grid, Enphase hopes that unnecessary restrictions on renewable resources and customer-owned DER can be lifted.
As a result, all parties involved can better benefit from the opportunities offered by distributed energy resources and Enphase customers will be among the first to benefit as new opportunities for their solar and battery systems are unlocked.
How deX helped
- The deX API made it simple for Enphase’s smart products to ‘plug in’ to deX. Once this single integration was completed, with no physical alterations required to hardware, all it took for Enphase systems to be registered in deX and as such, visible to the networks, was their customers’ permission.
- Twenty per cent of all Enphase customers, across five networks in five states, who received the invitation to join the decentralised energy exchange program, opted-in to do so within the first two weeks through their own Enphase My Enlighten platform. This showed that there’s a customer desire to contribute to the future of renewable energy in Australia and a safe, reliable grid.
deX functionality
- Customer DER registration
- DER telemetry in deX

Simply Energy VPPx
Helping stabilise South Australia’s power supply
Case study
The South Australian energy landscape is characterised by high penetration of renewable energy, including rooftop solar PV. This has presented challenges to energy providers in the region who are responsible for the reliable supply of power to customers.
Simply Energy – an Australian energy company who provides electricity to more than 600,000 customers – saw an opportunity to diversify its energy services and offerings to end customers, while also supporting the local network.
By partnering with GreenSync to establish a 6 MW virtual power plant (VPP), made up of 1200 residential batteries, and managed via the deX platform, Simply Energy developed new ways to engage with customers, creating new value streams and providing market support.
The project is in collaboration with South Australia’s sole electricity distributor, SA Power Networks, who is responsible for over 850,000 homes across the state and has received co-funding from ARENA as part of the Advancing Renewables Program.
How deX helped
- Simply Energy is able to aggregate and manage the batteries, and add in new technology brand options for its customers, forming a large, multi-technology VPP that can also provide grid and wholesale market support.
- Provides SA Power Networks’ visibility of the 1200 batteries’ location, capability and activity, along with mediation to ensure their activity doesn’t compromise the operating limits of the grid.
- Integration with VPP software for facilitating contracts and control of the batteries to participate in market activity.
- Simply Energy is able to run spot market demand response programs via the deX platform.
deX functionality
- API integrations into deX
- deX DER registration
- Visibility and mediation functionality for DNSP
- Publish contracts and constraint data
- VPP dispatch for wholesale and FCAS (Frequency Control Ancillary Services)

Wellington Electricity
Delivering a new business model for electric vehicle charging solutions at scale
Case study
As one of a number of initiatives aimed at achieving its [HS1] emissions reduction targets, the New Zealand government made the decision to actively encourage the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs).
To help facilitate this, the capital city’s electricity distribution business, Wellington Electricity, partnered with GreenSync to explore a way to support charging EVs at scale, while managing the extra electricity demand this places on the network.
The project, titled EV Connect, is co-funded by the New Zealand Government’s Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund and aims ultimately to avoid the need for additional costly network augmentation.
How deX helps
- Streamlining the integration process with smart charging technology.
- Providing the tools to coordinate smart charging infrastructure, making assets visible to Wellington Electricity and possible for the network to manage peak electricity demand on the grid using dynamic limits via deX’s Dynamic Connection Agreements.
- Supporting corporate EV fleet managers, electricity retailers and Wellington Electricity to work together to benefit to EV customers via deX market capabilities.
- Developing a roadmap, in collaboration with wider industry stakeholders, so that the program can be scaled regionally, with considerations for national expansion or replication.
deX functionality
- Multiple charging technology API integration
- deX DER registration
- Dynamic dispatch via dynamic connection agreements
- Future: retailer VPP service contracting and dispatch

UK Power Networks
Delivering DER flexibility markets as part of the world’s most advanced network control system for UK Power Networks.
Case Study
Great Britain’s biggest electricity distributor, UK Power Networks, is implementing an Active Network Management system to manage DER across its network area. It will also enable over 500MW of DER – mostly renewable energy like wind and solar – to connect to the network quicker and easier, and power more than a quarter of a million homes.
UK Power Networks is the UK’s first network operator to be procuring flexible energy services as the default option, rather than investing in expensive upgrades of its network infrastructure, on its path to transform into a Distribution System Operator (DSO).
How deX helps
- deX is forming the project’s market platform, connecting and contracting flexibility services from distributed energy resources and dovetailing into operational system security and forecasting.
- Tenders via deX Markets will be used to manage medium voltage constraints on a least-cost basis, using commercial and industrial demand response and creating a world-first scalable marketplace for flexibility services.
- Integrations with Smarter Grid Solutions’ and Nexant’s software will enable data to flow two ways. deX acts as the middleware – informed by and informing – Smarter Grid Solutions’ Active Network Management of the DER behaviour. deX also connects with Nexant’s iEnergy software which provides the user interface and workflow representing the data and information flowing from deX’s market platform.
deX functionality
- Participant and DER registration in deX
- Creation of tenders and bids
- Publishing contracts and constraint data
- Mediation from ADMS via Smarter Grid Solutions DERMS
- Production DSO capability
- Digital flexibility service contracts for constraint management
